Today I would like to talk about teamwork. It is said that teamwork is naturally essential both in business and sports. I have an experience with baseball since I was a child, so the word “teamwork” is one of the words with which I am very familiar.
So, what does teamwork mean in a nutshell?
In conclusion, I believe it is “each person plays their role in achieving the team’s goals.”
I think there are many cases in which teamwork = getting along with each other, which is a common misunderstanding. Of course, team members need to communicate with each other with a good sense of atmosphere. However, it is a prerequisite that the team has a common goal. Teamwork without a common goal is just familiarity and will no longer function as a team.
On the other hand, if there is a common goal, but roles and responsibilities are unclear, the team will not function. Eventually, some members will not work on it, thinking their seniors or superiors will take care of their responsibilities. Then, it is also not enough to just fulfill your own role. You should always be willing to help when team members call for help. This attitude of “it’s not my job, and it’s none of my business” is absolutely not acceptable. Sometimes self-sacrifice is critical in teamwork to achieve the team’s common goal.
