It is said that we Japanese have a strong tendency to dislike change. Some people take matters and rules once decided as a shield and completely abandon thinking in a thought-stopped state.

It is essential to comply with rules and regulations for the smooth operation of society and organizations. However, in today’s rapidly changing world, existing rules and regulations quickly need to be updated.

Needless to say, it is crucial to adapt to the changing times. However, in many cases, companies try to respond to changes in the world by changing operational policies and detailed systems within the frameworks and rules they have been operating in the past.

The approach of questioning or changing the rules is rarely taken. In fact, changing the rules requires a tremendous amount of energy. And changing the rules is sure to be met with much opposition from those with existing vested interests.

There is no doubt that changing the rules will be met with a great deal of opposition from existing vested interests, who will say, “We’ve done it this way before,” “Why should we change now? or “It’s unprecedented,” please question the conventional wisdom and rules before saying these clichés.

Don’t be afraid of change. By not changing, you may be able to avoid major failures, but you will never succeed. The world is constantly changing, and if you continue to make no changes, one day, you will lose your competitive edge and will surely fail.
