Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazo, gave the following talk in his commencement address at Princeton University in 2010. (see attached Youtube for original text)

“We are what we choose. Cleverness is a gift, kindness is a choice.”

As he also mentioned in the speech, gifts and cleverness are naturally helpful in our lives. However, equal ability does not guarantee an equally happy life. It is up to us to make the best use of our gifts and kill them by our choices.

Thanks to significant technological advances, we can use convenient services without understanding the complicated mechanics behind the technology. As technology develops, the advantage of cleverness diminishes. (I believe that smarts will remain an important weapon for those developing technology).

What is essential in our lives is how we use technology and services. The choice is left to us, whether to abuse it or use it for the good of society.

Using technology is possible to arrive at the right answer in a particular area. For example, it is easier than a few decades ago to select the correct veterinary approach and solution in veterinary medicine due to technological developments such as examination equipment.

It is important to choose which approach or answer is best for the pet and owner in front of you and how best to communicate it. There needs to be more added value in simply sharing textbook answers.

Is it right to spend a lot of money or give a lot of physical treatment to an older pet? There is no right answer. If you can afford it and wish to stay with them for as long as possible, even a minute or a second, that is the ‘right’ answer. If you don’t want them(pet) to suffer due to additional surgery or anything, not to further treatment is also a correct answer.

There is a greater need to focus on the final beneficiary, the “person” or “pets,” rather than just on technology or disease. However, since they are living creatures, there is no completely correct answer there.

It is up to us to decide what kind of choice we want to make. I would like to say that we should make choices with kindness. There is no great added value in being the most efficient or the most economically rational, or in making decisions based on numbers. Anyone can easily imitat the way you choose based on numbers someday. Please select and do what you think is the most graceful, and you will not regret it.

If you repeatedly make choices with kindness, you will unlikely regret them years or decades from now. Make decisions and choices with gentleness in order to live a rich life with no regrets.
