When we work in groups or organizations, we sometimes have differing views. However, disagreement is not a reason to delay or stop decision-making altogether. The key to moving things forward in the face of disagreement is to follow the principle of “Disagree and Commit.”

What is Disagree and Commit? This principle advocates that even if your opinion is not chosen, once a decision is made, you should fully support it and be committed to its implementation. Originally introduced by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, this principle has become a vital leadership principle for team productivity.

At first glance, it may seem difficult to accept when one’s opinion is not adopted. However, behind this principle lies a deep belief in prioritizing overall efficiency and success. When one continues to argue and delay decisions when one’s opinion is not adopted, it hinders overall progress and negatively impacts overall performance.

Strong decision-making by the leader is critical to the effective operation of this principle.
There is no clear-cut right answer in all decision making. Unlike in school, in the business world we are constantly pursuing questions for which there are no right answers. In order to make highly accurate decisions, it is necessary to gather information, and sometimes it is important to be flexible and change the decision once made.

It is necessary to have a strong will to select and implement the best approach for the whole, rather than being carried along by the air.

The Japanese strongly prefer majority rule and council in important decision-making. Behind this lies the desire not to take responsibility for failure rather than for the success of the team as a whole. For leaders to demonstrate strong leadership and succeed as a team, creating an organizational culture that fully demonstrates the principle of “Disagree and commit ” is important.
