Today I’d like to write about having the courage not to read between the line.
Many Japanese are susceptible to peer pressure, and even if you feel something is not right, they often read between the line and let the situation flow without saying their opinions. Unfortunately, we can see many times such a situation in Japan.
Reading between the line means “to be concerned with what is in front of you and not to see the essence. Is that really the way to go? Even if you hurt colleagues, you will please them by producing results. Isn’t that a sense of responsibility, and isn’t that the world of work?
By the way, “not being able to read between the line” and “not reading between the line” are two completely different things. Being able to read between the line makes it possible not to read it. You may think that not reading between the line does not fit into Japanese culture, but if you do not read between the line because of a heartfelt and genuine desire for results, you will definitely not get into a fight. All you have to do is to explain in good faith why you thought so.
It is too late to regret it later. There is absolutely no value in reading between the line itself. What can I do? What is the value that you can create? Rather than reading between the line with concern for those around you, keep thinking seriously about what only you can do and acquire the habit of confidently expressing and implementing your opinions.
